Frequently Asked Questions?
Q. Where can I see ALGIS running?
A. Because your application will be unique to your mill, it is best to see ALGIS running at our test location so you can see ALGIS grading your lumber to your customized specifications.
Q. How will ALGIS grade my lumber at your test location?
A. Your grade inspectors choose 100 pieces of your lumber, mark each board 1-100 and grade each piece, and record the results. Bring these 100 pieces to ALGIS with your personnel and compare your grade results to the results ALGIS gets when we run it randomly.
Q. When can I see an ALGIS demonstration?
A. We are scheduling demonstrations now. Contact us at: 1-800-660-6623

Q. Is ALGIS a grader assist system?
A. ALGIS is a completely automatic grade and inspection system. No human graders will be required by ALGIS to grade your lumber.
Q. How accurate is ALGIS?
A. ALGIS will measure length, width, thickness, and defects, at line speeds, with an error rate of no more than +/- .020”.
Q. How does ALGIS see all four sides of my lumber?
A. With the incorporation of the patented End-Scan System, ALGIS sees all four sides and both ends of the board from above the table. This feature eliminates trying to keep imaging cameras and lighting units clean that would have to be positioned below the grade table.
Q. What standards does ALGIS grade to?
A. Your local grading rules are programmed permanently into each of ALGIS’S 2 foot modules. Each 2 foot grade is sent to a host computer where management has full control to decide on grade and trim decisions based on market conditions or other parameters.
Q. What is the Scan Rate?
A.The lineal term “Scan Rate” does not technically apply to ALGIS. Because ALGIS uses digital area scan technology, the total surface of your lumber is scanned. The distance between scanning samples is 1 pixel which translates to 1 mm or 0.04”.
Q. How fast is ALGIS?
A. ALGIS is manufactured with the latest hi-tech equipment available today and is capable of grading up to 225 pieces per minute.
Q. Does Algis have a manual over-ride?
A.Yes, simply move your grade mark reader back over the table, put your manual graders back in place and you are up and running. The maximum down time for any reason will not be any longer than 10 minutes.
Q. What species can Algis grade?
A. Algis will grade any species graded under NLGA rules.
Q. Will Algis grade appearance grades?
A. Yes, it can be programmed to accept all appearance grade requests.
Q. What is the payback period I can expect with ALGIS?
A. Results will vary between mills but 4 months is typical
Q. Will ALGIS leave any marks on my lumber?
A.Absolutely not, ALGIS never touches your lumber. There are no oily hydraulic or mechanical drive rollers required by ALGIS.
Q. What is the size range of lumber that ALGIS can grade
A. Unrestricted length and random thickness and width.
Q. How is ALGIS Serviced?
A.Twenty four hour, seven days per week, totally secure servicing will be available via the Ethernet. We will be able to trouble shoot your system remotely. You will not need a special tech person on site. No special training is required. The management control panel is user friendly and all warning systems are automatic. Any physical maintenance will be carried out by ALGIS factory trained technicians. A module that has become faulty is exchanged with a spare on site module and shipped to ALGIS for repair and automatic upgrade.
